Who is Jesus?

God’s Word (the Bible) reveals that Jesus is the Son of God, the second person of the Holy Trinity. He entered His creation to save us sinners from everlasting condemnation by taking our sin upon Himself and dying on the cross for us. Risen from the dead, Jesus has been exalted to the Father’s right hand. Yet, He is ever near — present with those who are gathered together in His name.

Can this Jesus really love me and you? Indeed, He does...

“God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.” [John 3:16]

“God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” [Romans 5:8]

“God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— and raised us up with Him and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages He might show the immeasurable riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” [Ephesians 2:4-10]

“See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are.” [1 John 3:1]

Jesus shows us His love to us in several ways. In Holy Baptism, He cleanses from sin, adopts into God’s family, clothes with His own righteousness, and gives the Holy Spirit. In His Holy Word, He calls to repentance, cleanses hearts, strengthens faith, and causes growth in grace and knowledge. In His Holy Supper, He gives His life-giving body and blood, forgives sins, and nourishes faith. That is why Christians gather together in God’s house regularly. We come to hear Christ’s Word, receive His gracious gifts, and offer back to Him our prayers and praise. We also come to help bear each other’s burdens and encourage one another.

Life in this broken world is difficult. It is filled with trial and tribulation, sorrow and heartache. Yet, we have a Savior who instills hope, provides strength, helps us bear our appointed cross, and fills us with great joy.
