Holy Baptism

We believe, teach, and confess that the Sacrament of Holy Baptism is a means of grace through which the Triune God forgives sinners, makes disciples, grants sonship, adopts into His family, clothes with Jesus’ perfect righteousness, and gives the gift of the Holy Spirit. Holy Baptism is administered with water in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

What does God’s Word say?

Below are a few Scripture passages that teach about Holy Baptism:

  • Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” [Matthew 28:18-20]
  • Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. [Mark 16:16]
  • Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to Himself.” [Acts 2:38-39]
  • “Rise and be baptized and wash away your sins, calling on His name.” [Acts 22:16]
  • Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? We were buried therefore with Him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in  newness of life. [Romans 6:3-4]
  • You were washed,  you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. [1 Corinthians 6:11b]
  • In Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. [Galatians 3:26-27]
  • There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call—one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. [Ephesians 4:4-6]
  • In Him also you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, having been buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also raised with Him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised Him from the dead. [Colossians 2:11-12]
  • He saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to His own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by His grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. [Titus 3:5-7]
  • Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. [1 Peter 3:21]
